Zcash Fireside Chat Recap

Recently, Metal CEO Marshall Hayner sat down with Bradley Miller from Zcash to discuss both projects, their vision for cryptocurrency, and so much more. This came at a pivotal moment for both companies; Zcash is preparing for its first network halving, scheduled for November 18th, and Metal is continuing development of Proton while rapidly expanding the capability and availability of Metal Pay.

Metal and Zcash have shared a relationship since the very beginning – Marshall Hayner was actually present at the launch of Zcash back in 2016! With nothing but respect for the Zcash team, Marshall stated “I’ve never seen a rival.”

One of the core themes of their discussion was the future of anonymous fully fungible digital cash. Both Marshall and Bradley spent time emphasizing that anonymity should be a priority for everyone. “It’s about financial privacy. It’s about freedom. Sometimes these topics get mixed up; people think that ‘anonymous’ is bad,” Marshall explained. “But ‘anonymous’ is good because it gives us privacy. We don’t have the ability to see into each other’s bank accounts, so why should we have the ability to see into each other’s cryptocurrency accounts?”

Bradley honed in on this idea, emphasizing the goal of Zcash and the Electric Coin Company is to “empower everyone with economic freedom.” Bradley summarized Zcash’s focus: “People throw around terms like ‘privacy coins’ and ‘anonymity,’ and it becomes pigeonholed in those areas. And that’s really not the core focus of Zcash; our goal is to create a future money that’s native to the Internet – and there’s core things that are necessary for that.”

Privacy is important to both Metal and Zcash. Marshall highlighted the fact that Zcash was “without a doubt the leader” in this next frontier of cryptocurrency. Likewise, Metal is focused on building the Proton Blockchain network, one that allows people to move money without having to hand over their private financial information. With plenty of work to be done, you can expect to see both of these projects expand, develop, and push the boundaries of how money and privacy can work together.

Marshall and Bradley spoke at length about more topics during this fireside chat, including the history of Bitcoin, the direction that this industry is moving, and more.
